How to Upgrade Magento

Upgrading softwares has always been a tricky and painful task. The most important thing, which you should keep in your mind, before upgrading your software, is to create a full backup of your site files and database file.

All you have to do is, goto your cPanel File Manager and keep a zip backup of all of the magento installation files and then goto phpmyadmin and export that database to a zip sql file.

Now, you are ready to upgrade your magento core.

In order to upgrade Magento, there are various ways, but most of them are very very complicated , for which you have to end up consulting an expert to do that for you.

Goto your Admin Panel > Magento Connect Manager [Not recommended anymore. So, dont try this. Contact us for a quote]


Note: If this is the first time you log in to Magento Connect (i.e. no packages are listed under the ‘connect.magentocommerce.com/core’ channel), you will need to prepare the downloader by typing “magento-core/Mage_All_Latest” in the Extension Key field, and then click on the Install button. Once the initial setup procedure has completed, click on Refresh.
Special Note if you are upgrading from v1.3.2.4 to v1.4.0.1 :

* We highly recommend disabling Magento cache before upgrading
* In layout of any custom theme the usage of catalog/product_list_toolbar block should be changed to page/html_pager:
1) Replace the catalog/product/list/toolbar.phtml of your theme by the new one
2) Update catalog.xml layout: should be replaced into
